Sally Mtambo

Sally Mtambo is an accomplished legal practitioner, corporate governance specialist, and researcher with over 15 years of experience in legal practice, corporate governance, energy law, and mineral law. She holds a Master of Laws (LL.M.) with Distinction from Vermont Law School, USA, and a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from Malawi. She is an admitted attorney in Malawi and has built an extensive career advising organizations across the public, private, and non-profit sectors.

Sally has served as a trusted legal advisor to non-governmental organizations, governments, and regional power pools throughout Southern Africa, providing strategic legal counsel on complex issues relating to energy regulation, governance, infrastructure development, and natural resource management. Her expertise spans corporate governance, regulatory compliance, public policy, environmental law, and sustainable development.

A respected researcher and thought leader, Sally’s work focuses on climate change justice, critical minerals governance, energy transition, and the geopolitical dynamics shaping Africa’s development trajectory. She is particularly interested in the intersection of law, sustainability, and equitable resource governance, with a view to advancing Africa’s interests in the global energy transition.

As a Fulbright Scholar and environmental law expert, Sally combines rigorous academic research with practical legal experience and strategic leadership. Her professional approach is grounded in a strong commitment to social justice, demonstrated through her provision of pro bono legal services to vulnerable and marginalized communities.

Sally is currently pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Law at the University of Cape Town, where her research examines climate change justice, critical minerals, and the legal and governance challenges associated with the global energy transition and state participation. Through her scholarship and professional practice, she continues to contribute to legal and policy discussions aimed at fostering sustainable, equitable, and resilient development across Africa.
